Clamping

To clamp and centre precisely

April 2014

Hannover Messe day two… a quite genial system to clamp parts of any shape very precisely yet using very simple and not so precise clamping parts is presented by Ijspeert Innovative Technologies on Hall 2, stand D54.

The Diaphragm Centring Technique has originally been developed to centre and clamp superconducting coils of the LHC Corrector magnets.

Ijspeert Innovative Technologies transforms CERN’s cutting edge techniques into efficient industrial applications

Ideal for any shape The diaphragm technique of CERN is ideal for the clamping and centring of parts of any shape, eg for their machining on a lathe or a CNC milling machine. This is done by creating a tool consisting of a stack of Diaphragm discs. The discs have an aperture that fits the profile of the piece to be centred but touch it on one side only. The discs are stacked with different orientations in order to touch finally all sides of the piece or pieces to be centred. In the chuck or vise the discs clamp and centre the object precisely.

Quick and cost effective The discs are in general all identical and made by punching or by laser cutting. Especially laser cutting allows to make very quickly such a tool for the centring of unusual shapes like squares, ellipses, diamond shapes etc.

Precision by addition of discs The centring precision is a function of the number of discs involved, for example a tool with 50 discs of 1 mm will obtain a centring precision 5x better than the tolerance of the individual discs. This allows obtaining a high precision with less precise discs.
